June 2018 Meeting
June 10- "Sophy’s Choice and Fanny’s Demise: Women Aboard Ship in the Regency Navy" presented by Susan Byars.
In Jane Austen’s “Persuasion,” Sophia Croft extols the glories of living on board ship with her husband, the admiral. But Austen’s young sister-in-law died in 1814 while living on board the HMS Namur with her own husband, Captain Charles Austen. This presentation explores the extraordinary experiences of women at many levels of society who found themselves on board British war ships in the early 19th century.
The meeting will start at 2 p.m. and will be held at Locust Grove (561 Blankenbaker Lane, Louisville, KY 40207) in the Audubon Room. Afternoon Tea (iced tea) and treats will be served after the presentation.
