September 2019 Meeting

Sept. 8- "Northanger Abbey's Free Indirect Discourse and Jane Austen's Winking Narrator" presented by Jessica Williams

Though not the first to use free indirect discourse, Jane Austen extends the narrative style, using it to convey the irony imbedded in her story and its characters.  In Northanger Abbey, she uses it to subtly poke fun at the inconsistencies of her characters, creating a narrator that seems knowingly to “wink” at the reader while conveying the story.

The meeting will start at 2 p.m. and will be held at Locust Grove (561 Blankenbaker Lane, Louisville, KY 40207) in the Audubon Room. Afternoon Tea and treats will be served after the presentation.
