September 15, 2024 Meeting
"Jane Tech: Technological Advancements During the Life of Jane Austen And the Regency Period"
Our September speaker - Ron Basham - is going to give a presentation that will focus on advancements in steam engine technology and subsequent inventions used in industry and in textile manufacturing occurring after Jane Austen's birth in 1775 through 1817. It asks, but does not always answer, three questions:
▪︎ Did Jane Austen know about and/or use products of this invention?
▪︎ How might this invention have affected her daily life?
▪︎ What does Winston Graham's Poldark book series have to do with the proliferation of steam engine technology in Regency England?
Doors open at 1:30. Feel free to bring a sweet or savory treat to share after the presentation. Please bring your refreshment on your own plate in order to minimize kitchen cleanup.
Location: Locust Grove Auditorium
Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Rolinda Sharples painted the iconic Regency scene of the Clifton Assembly Rooms, which opened in 1806 - the year Jane Austen visited Clifton. Hear details about their life in England and America. Like Jane, Rolinda died far too young in her 40s. And like Jane, her work lives on to be appreciated by modern audiences.
Presenter: Bonny Wise
Location: Locust Grove Auditorium
Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m.
More information about this meeting: After the presentation, we will serve hot tea along with tasty treats brought in by members. Feel free to bring a sweet or savory treat to share after any presentation!
Just a reminder to bring your own teacup and saucer (if possible). If you do not have a teacup and saucer, fret not, we will always have teacups & saucers for our members and guests to use. If you bring your own, we suggest that you tie a ribbon around the handle so that we'll know it is a private teacup and saucer so that it does not get mixed up with JASNA's sets. Bringing your own significantly reduces our cleanup duties, since we do not have a dishwasher.
After all of our meetings, we especially need volunteers to help clean up afterwards - to put up chairs, wash/dry dishes, pack away teacups, saucers, and plates, and just general tidying-up in the kitchen. The more helpers we have, the faster we'll get things done.

Pelisse Workshop at Market Street Inn
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, March 3, 4 & 5, 2023: A workshop will be held at the Market Street Inn in Jeffersonville, IN for a new "Pelisse" pattern from Figleaf Patterns. We will be testing the new pattern and will have 1st access to this new design! You may choose to stay at the inn or be a drop-in guest.
A Pelisse is the quintessential women's outerwear garment of the early 19th Century. It had to be very fitted and tailored to better cover the insubstantial textile of the gowns underneath.
More information is forthcoming.

We do not have a dishwasher to help wash all those dainty cups and saucers, so I am suggesting that members bring their own teacup and saucer (if possible). We will have some set out for those who don't have their own and for any visitors. And may I suggest that you tie a ribbon around the handle so that we'll know it is a private teacup & saucer so that it does not get mixed up with JASNA's sets. JASNA-GL January 2023 Meeting- Regional Officer Elections
We will be holding elections for our region's officers and will meet in the Locust Grove auditorium from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
It is VERY important that you attend, especially if you are a member in good standing (dues are up to date), because we need a quorum of 20% of members present for the election votes to be valid. A separate email was sent to members for those who may need to vote by email.
Your help is needed…
As many of us know, after Jane Austen's father died, she, her sister and mother sank lower and lower & had to depend on support from her brothers in order to survive. Being invited to live -rent free!- at Chawton Cottage must have been such a relief.
Many homeless centers provide temporary relief to those who do not have anywhere else to go. While our organization cannot provide shelter, we CAN collect and donate the #1 item requested - socks.
If you are able, please bring a pair of NEW, warm socks to our next meeting, January 8th. They will be donated to a local men's homeless shelter in Louisville.
We have a goal of 30 socks so that at least 30 men won't have to say, "My feet are cold."
We will have tea and treats at the conclusion of the elections. Please feel free to bring treats to share.
JASNA-GL November Meeting
Sunday, November 13th, we will meet at Locust Grove, which should be beautiful with a light dusting of snow. Current Interim Regional Coordinator, Janet Abell, will be speaking about the past, present, and potential future of our group and how we need YOU to be a part of our future. She will also be sharing why we are not dressing in Regency attire at Locust Grove (for now, at least).
Feel free to bring a tasty treat to share! Iced tea will be provided.
As always, we appreciate help setting up and cleaning up.
JASNA-GL October 2022 Meeting
●● SAVE THE DATE ●●
DATE: Sunday, Oct 2nd, 2:00-4:00pm
LOCATION: Locust Grove Auditorium
MEETING INFORMATION: Our next presentation will be by Kristina L Hochwender, PhD, who is Associate Professor, Department of English and Creative Writing, and Director, Eykamp Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Evansville.
Her topic will be..."A Clergyman out of His Pulpit: Jane Austen and the Roots of the Victorian Clerical Novel"
“One scarcely sees a clergyman out of his pulpit,” complains Mary Crawford to Edward Bertram in Mansfield Park. Yet far from being visible only in their pulpits, Austen’s clerics are everywhere present in their communities, advising, dancing, and frequently making offers of marriage. (Indeed, it’s a rarity to see them in church at all!) From Henry Tilney to Mr Collins to Edward Bertram, Austen’s clerics are some of her most memorable characters, and in creating them, she lays the foundations for one of the most popular genres of the second half of the nineteenth century: the clerical novel. With its focus on finance, reputation, marriage, and profession, the Victorian clerical novel was a publishing sensation, establishing the reputations of authors as popular and respected as George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, George MacDonald, and Margaret Oliphant. Indeed, in 1857, as Eliot was writing her first work of fiction, Scenes of Clerical Life, she was re-reading Austen. October’s talk will focus on the links between Austen’s clergymen and their earnest Victorian descendants.

JASNA-GL September 2022 Picnic
On Sunday, September 4th, from 2pm to 4pm we are having a "Picnic On the Grounds" at a beautiful Historic home, now acting as the Bashford Manor Inn!! This home was built in 1796 by Major Samuel E. Bray and his wife, Nancy Lyle Bray on land given to Samuel Bray as payment for serving in the Revolutionary War and for surveying what was then Virginia. If you'd like to learn more, Google "Bray Place, Louisville, KY".
The house and property have been used for many purposes: from a family home to a Union encampment during part of the Civil War to a horse farm.
Dressing in Regency attire is recommended (but not mandatory). There are some outdoor seats, but bring your own chair or blanket just to be safe. Please use caution in the grassy areas as there may be more uneven areas and/or soft spots.
JASNA-GL will provide Kentucky Fried Chicken, iced tea, water, cups, plates, utensils, and napkins. We ask that attendees bring a side dish to share. Please RSVP if you are coming and also what dish (or kind of dish) you are bringing so that we don't have 10 potato salads! *** If you're pinched for time that weekend and won't be able to bring anything, just RSVP with your name. There will be plenty for everyone! ***
Parking is limited, so please park ONLY on the side of the house by the entrance to the small parking lot. I'll have some sort of signs.
Please note that the Inn will be full the day we will be visiting, so please enjoy picnicking but do so away from any entrances to rooms where guests are staying. We did notify the owner that all guests are invited to the picnic, so if you see a new face, feel free to welcome them.
The address is 2227 Bashford Manor Lane, Louisville, KY 40218. This facility is handicapped accessible as well. Please visit: www.bashfordmanor.com
NOTE: Rain will NOT cancel this event.
RSVP to Janet Abell, Interim Regional Coordinator: abellj59@yahoo.com
